The Benefits of a Safety Committee

Within the past couple of months, we have seen at OSEA, an increase in Safety Committee’s being implemented at our clients’ locations. We couldn’t be happier about this as Safety Committees help to drive a positive safety culture from top management, creating an overall safer environment for everyone. Some of the benefits of Safety Committees besides a positive safety culture include:

  • A trend showing of repeated accidents/injuries that occur. By reviewing your accidents/injuries every month or quarter you will see trends in accidents/injuries, if there are any. With this trend data, the safety committee can work to see if the process, people, or anything else is causing or contributing to this accident/injury trend and how to rectify that.
  • Create safer jobs or processes based on near misses. A review of near misses can show management where there is a possibility of an accident/injury to occur and to use the 3 measures/method (Engineering Control, Administrative Controls, and/or PPE) to make that job or process safer and reducing your workers compensation.
  • Create best practice programs/procedures that go above and beyond regulation helping to reduce workers compensation. Reviewing safety programs/procedures can help you modify your programs/procedures to ensure that you are staying compliant with federal, state, and local regulations while also using best practice recommendations to keep employees safe, reducing your accidents and injuries in turn reducing your workers compensation.

Our challenge to you for 2021 is to create a company Safety Committee or to stick with it if you already have one set in place; make sure to ask for employees to volunteer for the Safety Committee meetings as well. This will bring awareness to employees that you are trying to make their jobs safer. OSEA is also available to attend safety committee meetings to help review your accident and injuries while offering suggestions to mitigate those hazards presented. Give us a call for more information.
